Prediction Imprecision UK vs Vandy 2/27/16
So…that just happened, Jamal Murray scored 33 Points which I did foresee and was another rebound away from a double double. Although unfortunately the buck stops there. Tyler Ulis was 5-20 from the field, 0-7 from three point range, and it was apparent from the start that this would not be his day at Memorial Gymnasium against a hungry Vanderbilt team. Kentucky’s frontcourt was once again non existent, other than a solid game from Marcus Lee. While we all love him Alex Poythress has always been a bit off and on from game to game throughout his career in Lexington. Today he played 16 minutes and only produced 3 rebounds, 1 block, 1 turnover, and 5 fouls. He didn’t take a shot. Even the surging Isaac Humphries couldn’t get it together today for the Cats. Only 4 Wildcats of the 9 that logged over 8 minutes in the game scored a single point, and the struggling Ulis was the second highest scorer behind Murray’s 33 with 12 points.
It has become irritably obvious that without Derek Willis, this team needs someone else to step up and fill that void and it just isn’t happening. While the fight in this team has grown immensely to even give themselves a chance towards the end of the game. If another player can’t rise to the challenge in Willis’ absence and in the rare game that Tyler Ulis is missing WIDE open layups then the struggles for Kentucky will continue against tournament worthy teams. Yet despite the unfortunate play of the Wildcats tonight I believe they are still a dangerous team in the tournaments. This was only Tyler Ulis’ second game of the year that he wasn’t at his best, Ohio State being the other, and hopefully Derek Willis will return soon. So I don’t look for the same struggles that the Cats had in Nashville to continue going forward.
Kentucky falls to second in the SEC at 21-9 and has to now travel to The Swamp at Florida Tuesday in hopes of road redemption.
